Soto Street Widening – Multnomah St to Mission Rd

HAI provided geotechnical investigation and analysis for the Soto Street Widening Project between Multnomah Street and Mission Road, a half-mile corridor in Los Angeles. The project involves widening the roadway by up to 40 feet, requiring significant excavation into the adjacent hillside. The maximum horizontal cut reached 80 feet, with vertical slope cuts up to 40 feet and retaining walls as high as 20 feet to ensure stability. HAI conducted geologic mapping, borings, laboratory testing, and slope stability modeling to evaluate potential failures and lateral earth pressures. The project required soil nail walls, tiebacks, and reinforced cut slopes to address highly variable soil and bedrock conditions. These geotechnical recommendations were essential in ensuring the long-term stability of the widened roadway in a challenging hillside environment.
